More than 100 venues will host the exam to check the knowledge of the Russian language. Among them are schools, universities, libraries, museums, shopping centers, creative places and other spaces in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region. “Total Dictation” will be available as an online event as well. The dictation will be complemented by the 18-hours online marathon.

The author of the text for the “Total Dictation 2022” is the writer Marina Stepnova. She will read her text at one of the venues in Yaroslavl, where the capital of the “Total Dictation” is located this year.

One of the press conference speakers, Irina Kizilova, Deputy Director of the Institute for Cultural Programs, noted that after a two-year break due to the measures against COVID-19, the award ceremony for the “Total Dictation” excellent students in St. Petersburg will be organized. The event will become a real celebration of the Russian language and literacy.

The “Total Dictation” project was launched in 2004 in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk. “Total Dictation” is a well-publicized event that has already become a beloved tradition for many in Russia and beyond. The main goal of the “Total Dictation” is to remind Russian speakers about the beauty and complexity of their language. Moreover the “Total Dictation” is a way for promotion and popularization of contemporary Russian literature.

The project team has been creative in its efforts to reinvent dictation as an entertaining exercise and make literacy trendy. Starting in 2010, the texts have been specifically written for the Total Dictation event, with famous and award-winning writers such as Dmitry Bykov, Dina Rubina, Leonid Yuzefovich, Dmitry Glukhovsky, and Guzel Yakhina acting as event headliners.
